We are used to being able to control a lot in today’s modern society. Many people therefore feel frustrated at not knowing exactly how much their baby is getting through breastfeeding. However, we do not need to measure or check everything, because your body and your baby take care of the entire procedure for us. Babies “order” their own amount of breast milk through breastfeeding, and children who pee and poo as they should and gain weight (the children’s health centre will keep track of this), are getting the right amount.
Breastfeeding is also so much more than food; it provides closeness, security and comfort. When your child wants to breastfeed, this isn’t always because they are hungry, but because sucking can also relieve pain. Through research, we know that a lack of breast milk is unusual, but the feeling of it is even greater. This is because breastfeeding is facilitated by the person breastfeeding feeling relaxed and confident about breastfeeding.
This where, as a partner, you can play a significant role in supporting and encouraging breastfeeding, as well as helping with all other aspects of breastfeeding. Equal parenting is not about how you feed your baby, but is instead a much broader concept. You can ensure that the person who is breastfeeding has a calm and harmonious environment, and also help with other household chores that need to be taken care of – because breastfeeding takes time!
Most people find that it takes a couple of months before breastfeeding feels easier and becomes a routine. Breastfeeding takes time – don’t rush it! You don’t have to invite everyone who wants to visit your baby to your home for a coffee or lunch before you feel ready for it.
DON’T FORGET – Whether you want to breastfeed or not is entirely up to you, and you don’t have to justify or defend your choice to anyone. The most important thing is that you and your baby are doing well and that you are receiving enough information to make conscious and informed choices.
