Breastfeeding – too much milk

Perhaps you feel that you have too much milk or a strong ejection reflex? This is not unusual during the periods when your milk is flowing!

Physiologically, milk will start to flow during days 3-5 after giving birth and this is completely normal. Your breasts will become tense from all the milk that is being produced, and it is easy to think that you have got caked breasts.

After this, your breasts will reposition themselves based on the needs of your child or children. Most of the time, both the breastfeeding mother and the baby handle the adjustment of milk production well, but it is important to have faith in both your own body and your baby’s ability to request breast milk.

If you have too much milk, it usually becomes noticeable after about a couple of weeks. Your child may then find it difficult to catch their breath if your breast suddenly expels too much milk, making it difficult to stay to the breast. Maybe your baby is gasping at your breast and coughing because they are taking in too much milk too quickly. Too much milk can generate a gassy stomach and loose stools, which in itself can lead to your child finding it difficult to calm down.

Tips if you have too much milk:

  • Breastfeed on one breast throughout the entire breastfeeding session, you can also do use the same one for two or three sessions before changing breasts, giving your breasts time to adapt.
  • Make sure that the breast your baby is not nursing on does not have anything squeezing or rubbing on it. Wear a loose bra.
