How can I stop breastfeeding at night?

Most babies wake up several times each night to feed and some babies continue to nurse during the entire breastfeeding period, while others nurse occasionally. But what do you do if you want to stop night-feeding?

There are different ways to stop breastfeeding at night. As with many other things concerning changes for both child and parent, it is important to be consistent and perhaps above all to have made up your mind as a parent and remind yourself why you made this decision. It may be that you need to remind yourself frequently as fatigue and emotions easily get the better of you.

A tip could be to make adjustments at the weekend or on days when there may be two adults at home who can take over from each other. For example, you can let your partner comfort your baby if they wake up at night, while you, who were breastfeeding earlier, sleep in another room, if possible.

Another option is that you have your baby with you but choose not to comfort them through breastfeeding. Try to find motivation in the fact that you made this decision with the conviction that it is the right decision for the family in the long term. Don’t forget that there is no negative value in backing down if you change your mind, it’s perfectly okay to breastfeed at night for a while longer and try again in the future!
