Taking care of a pregnant woman: 5 invaluable tips!

From the beginning to the end of pregnancy, many women experience a roller coaster of emotions, bodily changes and pregnancy-related discomforts. When you as a partner go through all this on the side, it can be difficult to know how to be supportive – that’s why we want to give you five invaluable tips for the journey.

1. Ask what your partner needs
If the pregnant person is doing very well, they may not need any special support, but if they are feeling worse, it is possible that they expect extra support from you. Since mood is incredibly individual and can change during pregnancy, it is best to ask what your partner needs from you. In this way, you can talk together about a suitable arrangement based on your situation.

2. Take responsibility for your home
It is common for the pregnant woman to have various problems such as pelvic girdle pain and fatigue, and the last part of the pregnancy is often difficult and stressful in many ways. This means that you as a partner can make a huge contribution by taking responsibility for the household, cooking, cleaning and fixing things. All such housework often requires a huge amount of energy from the pregnant person, so by taking on these tasks, you are, in short, a superhero.

3. Small gestures of appreciation
There are almost certainly little things in everyday life that you can do to make the pregnant person feel cared for. It could be giving them a massage, arranging a cosy dinner, shopping for their favourite snacks, taking care of the dishes when you see they’re tired or something as small as letting them choose a movie on a Friday evening. Small acts of love usually have the greatest impact and are exactly what many people appreciate the most.

4. Take thier temper with a grain of salt
Pregnancy comes with an unprecedented surge of hormones, which partners often witness first-hand. You may not understand the logic of certain things the pregnant person says or does, and quite honestly, they probably don’t always either. As a partner, it is therefore important to be cunning and work out when it is your partner reacting and when it is hormones playing tricks. This is not an easy task, but you have to try. And remember! It is still the pregnant person who bears the brunt of these hormonal and bodily changes.

5. Show commitment!
During pregnancy, you and your partner will probably continue to live as normal. It can make you feel distanced from everything that is going on in their body and it can be difficult to grasp the fact that there is a child growing in their belly. By showing commitment to what the pregnant person is going through, you will likely feel much more involved in the pregnancy journey, while at the same time making the mother-to-be happy through your commitment.

Bonus tip: Several of our users have told us that they read or listen to the weekly information together every week during pregnancy. This contributes to a creating a cosy moment together!
