Tips for breastfeeding twins

It’s a great joy to welcome two or more children into the family at the same time, but it can also be a challenge – especially when it comes to breastfeeding. With the right help, breastfeeding twins can go smoothly.

Breastfeeding twins can seem challenging at first, but is totally possible if you want to give it a shot. Breastfeeding is a great opportunity for closeness and you can even save some time by feeding both babies at the same time!

Once breastfeeding starts, many people find that breastfeeding is easier than bottle-feeding two babies. Some prefer to breastfeed one child at a time in the beginning, so that both parent and child can focus, but also to get to know that particular child.

As a twin parent, it may be that you want to blame the circumstances of having twins. So, don’t forget that it will be unfamiliar and tricky for most people at the beginning, even for those breastfeeding a baby. Give it some time and practice if you want to give breastfeeding a chance.

Tips when breastfeeding twins

  • Make sure you have a good nursing pillow or other cushions so that you can support your children against them and keep your hands free.
  • Try to train both yourself and your children to breastfeed at the same time, as soon as possible.
  • If you stimulate both breasts at the same time, that is breastfeed both at the same time, more milk will be produced.
  • The child that shows signs of wanting to breastfeed first gets to decide the pace, that is when it is time to breastfeed.
  • To learn breastfeeding techniques, many people prefer to breastfeed in a position where their children’s heads are against each other and their children’s stomachs are against your stomach.
